The steel itself was patinated with a gun blue patina and then a black oil and then black wax and polished with a buffing wheel.

This staircase looks to be a pretty straightforward railing; however, the lines of the staircase if continued into space would create a 200+ foot circle. Therefore, the staircase needed to be created in 3 dimensions in our shop by mocking up where the posts hit the steps and then curving the top rail and pickets to the radius mentioned above. The result was pretty outstanding. 

Built staircases often vary from the spec. Steps are variable heights, walls are not plumb, etc. That’s why railings that come in a mail order kit often do not fit. At McLean Forge & Welding we measure every job to ensure a custom fit and a project that meets your expectations.

While metal is a more expensive material than wood, its ability to last much longer with little maintenance can offset the cost. They are also easy to clean, requiring only a quick pressure wash now and then.

Our client had a vision for this gorgeous Pergola that we co-designed and constructed for her. It’s solid as a rock, engineered and flashed  into the structure of the house. The end result saves on cooling bills for the house and provides a respite from the unrelenting southern sun exposure.

Metal pergolas can be constructed from different metals like steel or aluminum. Steel pergolas have the advantage of being much stronger than aluminum (important if you live in high-wind areas). When you galvanize the steel and add a powdered coating, it becomes almost impervious to rust and corrosion while making it highly resistant to chipping, scratching, and UV damage.

And because metal can be made to be both thin and durable, metal pergolas can be made to have narrower and sleeker designs that wood just can’t match. Finally, metal can be recycled at the end of its lifespan, which means this pergola won’t end up in a landfill like wooden options often do.
